Friends of The Rub – DJ mOma

For our latest entry into “Friends of The Rub” we bring you a close friend and collaborator of ours, DJ mOma. One of NYC’s most prolific DJ’s for years now, mOma has played numerous Rub’s (including our huge NYE 2012 party) as well contributed to DJ Ayres’ Heavy Warmup Series.

Tomorrow night, we bring him back with us to crush our first official Saturday residency at The Bell House. He’ll be holding things down in the back bar all night. Gonna be rowdy.

We’re also big fans of his remix work and want to make sure all of you pick up his latest 2 tracks.

His “Love Forever” Michael Jackson rework brings the house down every time:

He just released this new one, a remix of the Fantasia song “Free Yourself” to get the dance floor grown n’ sexy:

Interview in Time Out New York

Time Out New York recently interviewed DJ Ayres and DJ Eleven about the latest happenings with The Rub as well as thoughts on our new home at The Bell House.

TONY: When you found out that Southpaw was closing, was there any thought of going on hiatus, or even shutting the party down?
Eleven: No, not at all. We’ve actually known for a while—several years at least—that we had sort of outgrown Southpaw, but we definitely never wanted to stop doing the Rub. What happened was, Southpaw told us they were closing down about ten days before the last party we did there. And Ayres and I literally left that meeting, walked a couple doors down to a coffee place and began to figure out what we were gonna do next. We didn’t skip a beat. You know, the Rub pays our bills, but it’s also something that’s near and dear to our hearts. It’s not something we want to walk away from because we have to. When we do walk away someday, it’ll be because we want to.

TONY: Does being in Brooklyn help?
Ayres: Definitely. When we started, there weren’t very many big parties at all in Brooklyn, and I think that let us have the Rub develop in a more natural way. We always wanted it to feel like a house party.

TONY: It’s always had the reputation of being a very unpretentious affair.
Eleven: That’s very important—probably the most important thing about the Rub. We know we have to take care of our friends, but we’ve always avoided creating a feeling of elitism. If you’ve got ten bucks and you’re okay with waiting in line for a bit, then we want you. Just be ready to party.

Friends of The Rub – Fashen

We’re happy to showcase our pal Fashen, a world-class DJ who most recently came through and tore up the The Rub’s guest slot this past January, and who is now just about to release his very first EP next week on Young Robots.

His debut EP “So Complete” came out of nowhere for a guy pretty much known for only being a top flight club DJ. The lead single “Ecstasy” is a such a stomper with a groovy rhythm and some seriously feel-good vocals. Summertime vibes written all over this one!

Be the first to listen to “Ecstasy” below:

Keep up with Fashen HERE

Young Robots is releasing this EP next Tuesday! Lots of heavy hitters lately from this label run by Skinny Friedman, DJ Apt One, and our own DJ Ayres. GET FAMILIAR

1 Week Away!

Getting closer and closer to party time everybody!!! Come see our new digs and close out April with a sweaty good time.

Our pal Mick Boogie is already well-known for putting out really solid mixtapes over the years, but the one he dropped today is getting tons of attention. “The Grand Royal Mixtape” is an extensive mix from the Beastie Boy catalog and absolutely worth a listen. The back story on the cover of this mix is also quite cool to read about, as he and photographer Jonathan Mannion worked together to recreate the Paul’s Boutique cover.

“Friends of the Rub” continues this week with a friend that is near and dear to our Rub family, Sammy Bananas.

Sam has been one busy guy this year with multiple projects under his belt. Last week, he put out a new track “La Musica” that we’re big fans of and is available for free download. Grab it below!

Can’t forget to mention his Young Jeezy “I Do” bootleg, which has been a staple in DJ sets all over the festivals the past few months. Such an addictive tune! Also available for free download below:

He also has been working on a very noteworthy cause called “DJ’s for Climate Change.” He’s put in a ton of his personal time to make a difference, and this past year was his biggest ever. Read more about his cause: DJ’s for Climate Change

Full support from us for this endeavor.

Big congrats to Sammy on getting engaged this year as well! Sorry ladies, you’ll have to try and find another mustache out there. This one’s taken.
