Back-to-back weeks here for FOTR and we’re featuring next level artist/graphic design types. This week is our upper Midwest brethren, Mike 2600 from Minneapolis. Chances are you’ve seen Mike’s solo designs or work for Burlesque of North America on a tour poster, t-shirt, vinyl artwork or even in print at some point in time over the years, and hopefully you’ve taken notice. Mike’s been one of our favorite artists for as long as we can remember and he’s easily one of the best all-around dudes to top it all. A purveyor of real raw rap and full-figured funk and long-time friend of The Rub, Mike has gotten parties open from St. Paul to San Francisco, from Oregon to Osaka.

This show ran May 2012.

FOTR this week is Bird Peterson out of Austin, TX. He’s been cranking out tunes on the reg for what seems like forever and he originally caught fire on the legendary Hollerboard before eventually releasing tracks on basically every dope independent dance label of the last 10 years. He’s also got his own Teenage Riot Records, which just saw the release of his latest project Meal Ticket along side a couple other FOTR’s in Mike 2600 and Sammy Bananas. #TBT this week takes us back to fall of 2010 as Ayres opened up his “dance pop” crate and cranked out this super fresh mix for Urban Outfitters. Return of the Mash is a slick representation of the electronic music experimentations that took place with pop music towards the end of the last decade which have ultimately became a huge influence on the Billboard charts of the last five years. Don’t necessarily believe me? Take a listen for yourself below and hear the early ideas from so many artists and producers that are dominating charts, playlists and festival lineups in 2015. The last call is here to enter Red Bull’s 2015 Thre3style World Finals! With a long list of Friends Of The Rub that have competed and even taken the crown, Four Color Zack, Moma, Mike 2600, Hedspin, Skratch Bastid + more, we wanted to let all our other homies know you still have some time to enter. This coming year’s world finals will be held in Tokyo, so don’t hesitate and if anything you get to go to Tokyo and reenact Bill Murray’s karaoke scene with all your best buds.

SXSW 2007, Austin TX (good photos by Ian Meyer, crummy ones by Ayres & Eleven)

SXSW festival last weekend was a tremendous amount of fun. There’s nothing like hanging out with friends from all over the world in 70 degree weather, seeing countless incredible musicians and djs for free all weekend, eating great food, and partying into the wee hours. Highlights (in no particular order): Ghostface Killah, The Melvins, Federation, Redman, Amy Winehouse, SWOLL, DJ Day, Mike 2600 King, Morse Code, Diplo, King Most, Catchdubs, DJ Mel, Prince Klasson, Smalltown DJs, Flosstradamus, A-Trak, Kid Sister, Vyle, Cool Kids, Federation, UGK, Rakim, Hier, DJ Haul, Revolution, Boris, Amanda Blank, Solico, RJD2, Nasa, breakdancing, bbq and Sabbath in the Motherfucking Park.
