FOTR: Skinny Friedman

Skinny At The Rub by Sho Shots

Skinny Friedman is a longtime homie and it was a treat to have him catch wreck last weekend at The Rub.  While he’s become a great music writer (as a steady contributor to Noisey among others) and a beast on the beats, his DJ sets never fail to be a blast!

For more, check his Chobani and Adderall 4 The Fall Classic mixtape from a couple months ago. So very tastefully turnt.

Friends of The Rub – Skinny Friedman

“Friends of The Rub” should be called “Family of The Rub” this week as we feature Andy “Skinny” Friedman. Andy has been a long-time associate of ours, creatively, as well as on an administrative level for us behind the scenes. On his own time, he has been working non-stop as a full-time DJ/producer along with running his own record label, Young Robots, with his Philadelphyinz partner DJ Apt-One and our guy DJ Ayres.

Skinny has a big release out today that’s getting support from all over called Trap Rave 2.0.

He’s been heavy into the Moombahton scene since Spring of 2010, but his work stands out from other Moombahtonistas due to his endearing love and knowledge of rap music. All of the tracks on Trap Rave 2.0 are remixes of recent rap hits. The set has a real cohesive feel and all play out real well to even the most finicky of dancefloors.

If you don’t believe us, check out the shout-out he got in Spin Magazine. BAWSE!

Along with the EP release today, he also out out a mix last week called “Rack Skinny Bitch” that bangs so hard.

We offer our full support to an old friend of ours and if you are in New York City this weekend, go rage with him at his EP release party. Pretty good chance he might take his shirt off at some point during this night of debauchery so don’t miss it!

FOTR: Funkontrol

FOTR this week is a new project from some old friends. Skinny Friedman and Scott Melker have united to form Funkontrol. While they’ve been hard a work on music together for awhile now, the project is newly unveiled and shared with the world. They’ve signed the project to Tommy Boy Records and just released their first single, “Banker’s Club”, a couple weeks ago. It’s a brooding and crispy electro influenced hip-hop track that’s really well done. You can stream it below in full as well as click some links to follow the guys. Stay tuned for an LP from them dropping as early as this Summer.

FOTR: Michael The Lion

FOTR this week is Michael The Lion. Formerly known as DJ Apt One, this Philly resident has made a name for himself all over the world as well as his home town. After carving out a name for himself as part of the Philadelphyinz with Skinny Friedman and making some early anthems in the Moombahton movement, he re-branded himself as Michael The Lion to focus on his love of classic disco and house. He’s since developed his Funk Train party in multiple markets, released music on Soul Clap, Razor N Tie and multiple other labels as well as becoming a father. His latest mix and single can be peeped below. Check out some links to keep up with all things Michael The Lion as well.

TBT: It’s the MF Remix 1-3

In 2005 we made a mix CD with a bunch of our blends, and it took off like a rocket, selling worldwide and garnering a ton of praise from music magazines and even the New York Times. So much so that a lot of people thought of The Rub as a “mash-up party” and we traveled the world playing clubs in this style. Over the next four years, we released two more mixes in the “It’s the Motherfucking Remix” series, and created a spinoff vinyl collection. As we’re celebrating our 14 year anniversary this Saturday, we thought we’d re-up the entire mix series. A huge shout out to all of our guest DJs at the party over the years who gave us remixes for the CDs, and special thanks to Nick Catchdubs and Four Color Zack for making the artwork.

FOTR: Scott Melker

Manhattan based producer/remixer/dj/music guru Scott Melker is our FOTR this week and if you’ve paid attention at all to remix DJ culture in the last few years, surely you’re familiar with The Melker Project. His grip on this realm has been fairly undeniable whether it’s been via his mash-ups or original productions, dude has been a part of some serious Serato weaponry over a steady diet of contributions. Over the last month though, he’s stepped into the internet radio format with his new ADHD mixshow. Already four volumes deep, the latest dropped last week featuring fellow FOTR alumni Skinny Friedman. Stream it below and don’t be shy about clicking some of his links as well.

Friends of The Rub – Fashen

We’re happy to showcase our pal Fashen, a world-class DJ who most recently came through and tore up the The Rub’s guest slot this past January, and who is now just about to release his very first EP next week on Young Robots.

His debut EP “So Complete” came out of nowhere for a guy pretty much known for only being a top flight club DJ. The lead single “Ecstasy” is a such a stomper with a groovy rhythm and some seriously feel-good vocals. Summertime vibes written all over this one!

Be the first to listen to “Ecstasy” below:

Keep up with Fashen HERE

Young Robots is releasing this EP next Tuesday! Lots of heavy hitters lately from this label run by Skinny Friedman, DJ Apt One, and our own DJ Ayres. GET FAMILIAR

Eleven & The Kickdrums: That’s Them!

I’ve been a fan of The Kickdrums since I first heard their David Axelrod flipping “Just A Game” in 2009.  But Fitts & Tilla have been on their grind a lot longer than that and their discography is crazy.  They’ve produced for 50 Cent, Chamillionaire, Joell Ortiz, Little Brother, Ray Cash, Ben Harper, and Good Charlotte, to name a handful of their credits.

On Feb 21st, 2011, I’m dropping their ‘Something’s Gotta Give” EP on 11 Inch Records.  (It includes remixes by Kutcorners, Sammy Bananas, Emynd, Sticky Noodles, Audience, and Skinny Friedman.)  But first!  It’s time for a look back at some of my favorite of their jams.  With appearances by the RZA, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Joell Ortiz, Wale, Young Chris, and Peter Bjorn & John, I give you The Kickdrums at their finest.
