#TBT DJ Eleven – 50 Minutes of Fresh

As one of the most prolific producers ever in rap music, Mannie Fresh’s resume of tunes is relatively insane. His reign as the go-to in-house guy at Cash Money Records is arguably responsible for starting the careers of Lil Wayne, Juvenile, BG…as well as his own group in Big Tymers. While that Cash Money ship has long since sailed, Mannie Fresh has collaborated with a who’s who of the rap world and imagine my excitement when I came across Eleven’s mix from 2009 last night showcasing so much of this stellar catalog. This one is a must revisit ASAP. Stream and download are below.

#TBT DJ Eleven – Best of the Bay 2

With Str8 West Coastin’ kicking off at Project Parlor this Saturday in Bed-Stuy and the Golden State Warriors winning the NBA Finals this week, it only makes sense to #TBT to the second half of Eleven’s Best of the Bay mix. Much like the first half, Eleven runs through classics on all levels of West Coast hip-hop that it feels like it’s easily the most appropriate soundtrack right now. West Coast is the best coast as they say right? Well maybe at least for this week.

#TBT DJ Eleven – White Light 20

I gave Ayres the nod on some house music flexing last week for #TBT and some quick poking around the internet brought me to this mix from Eleven. If you’re unaware, the White Light Series has been going since the back in the Hollerboard days and has an incredibly storied history. The series is currently up to episode 118 now and Eleven got in early at 20 with so much choice disco flavored house music from like 5 years ago that has obviously influenced a lot trends on the currently burgeoning global house scene that appears to be way more about vibes than trying to turning up. Eleven himself explained the mix as “I set out to make a mix from records I never get a chance to play out that would provide the perfect soundtrack to the walking, turnstile hopping, dude-selling-his-beat-tape-out-front-of-Fat Beats-avoiding, taxi-hailing, dollar-van-riding, slice-grabbing, coffee-on-the-run-drinking, and then walking a little more that is getting around the Rotten Apple.” Stream and download are available below.

There’s just something about summer themed music that just makes everything seem all right. For this week’s #TBT, that’s exactly what Eleven brings to the table with a delicious mix of some of the most memorable summer tunes maybe ever. Summer Madness is a complete 180 from his previously mentioned Winter Sadness series where the feels should obviously flip from bundling up inside by a fireside to drinking your favorite beverage on a patio with your friends in the warm sun. If the weather is turning super nice in your part of the world, like it’s starting to in NY, check this stream below for your instant soundtrack.

#TBT The Rub – Going Back to Cali

Almost exactly a decade ago, The Rub did a Summer West Coast tour to flex their muscles (aka DJ skills) and commemorated this journey with their very appropriately titled mix, Going Back to Cali. In what’s a very timely #TBT for this week, this mix showcased a wide variety of tunes with an obvious homage to a number of artists who have been instrumental in putting the West on the map and continuing that tradition of excellence. The beauty of this mix to me though it never stays in one place stylistically or regionally, and the flow of sample drops in between their modern era flips is all too slick. Just take a listen below and see if this doesn’t make you want to hit Cali for a summer getaway.

#TBT DJ Eleven – Best of the Bay 1

The Bay Area has always been one of the most influential regions for hip-hop and rap music, whether it’s fully realized or not. It’s been one of my favorite scenes as well on a personal tip, especially since it’s frequently been so rooted in ’70s and 80’s funk music. For our #TBT this week, we revisit the first half of Eleven’s Best of the Bay mix and it’s thick with so many names and artists from this scene that you really should already be familiar with. Whether it’s well known names like Too $hort, E-40 and Mac Dre or the lesser known acts like 415, The Whoridas and Casual…this entire mix slaps and is more than worth the listen. Links to stream and download, per usual, are below.

While this week’s #TBT mix was more part of a specific promotional effort when it dropped almost three years ago, the music featured on Summer Of The Rub has played such an instrumental roll in my whole musical makeup and inspirations. Both of my parents were born in 1950 and so much of the music they introduced me to as a kid growing up was from this time period. Sounds like these always remind me of better times and the title appropriate, hint of summer. Eleven and Ayres again showcasing that unique sense of being able to completely dial in a vibe.

This week’s #TBT is in the spirit of 2000 and the debut run of the Spitkicker Tour curated by De La Soul. Ayres & Eleven smoothly run through this hour and change of head nod inducing classic collaborations they appropriately called Spitkicker Collabs 1. The tracklist features the original tour lineup up of De La, Common, Pharoahe Monch and a host other cuts that quickly remind you how fresh this time period in hip-hop really was. Grabbing De La Soul to also host the mix definitely didn’t hurt things either.

#TBT DJ Eleven – I Love Soul

DJ Eleven - I Love Soul

February is quickly coming to a close this week, but that’s no reason to give up on love. Love honestly really knows no boundaries, genres or even specific eras of time. In fact, I’d go so far to say that love will always and forever be “in”, especially when it comes to music, art and the freedom of expression. DJ Eleven embodies this vibe so well for our #TBT this week with a revisit to his I Love Soul mixtape. Timeless favorites from all eras and walks of life, all brought together by a dense love for soul.
