#TBT Rub Radio – RIP Prodigy

Hard to believe it’s already been a year since we lost Prodigy. Recorded live at The Rub last June with Ayres on the decks. RIP to this true hip-hop legend. Shout out again to Mike Davis for the cover art.

To get pumped up for our Belly screening and afterparty, we’ve been gathering up all the songs with Hype Williams music videos. Hype has directed something like 200 clips since 1991 – he’s done 20 videos with Kanye West alone. So to keep the mix from being 10 hours long, we focused on his mid to late 90s output, basically the Belly era. And it’s a real meaningful time for us, as we went from rocking house parties to playing primetime slots in New York clubs along this same timeline.

We are screening Belly at The Alamo in Brooklyn on Thursday, May 10 to launch their our film series. And after the movie, DJ Eleven and DJ Ayres will be spinning a special set of 90s hip-hop, R&B and dancehall records at The House of Wax, inside The Alamo and free to the public! Even if you missed getting a ticket for the movie, you can still come drink and party with us from around 8:45 on, at 445 Albee Square West.

Rub Radio Feb 2018 – Getlive! at DAF12

DJ Getlive!, one of our favorite guests at The Rub, returns to the party this month so we gladly handed him the keys to Rub Radio. He comes with a beast of a live set from this year’s Donuts Are Forever 12, an annual J Dilla tribute party in Brooklyn.

#TBT this week is to our February 2016 guest edition of Rub Radio from Rok One. Because he has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things rap related and makes great mixes, we thought he’d be the perfect person to make an Anti-Valentine’s Day mix last year. If you believe in holding grudges against exes who did you wrong, lyrics explicitly airing your awkward sexual predictions (hi Kanye!), and a general hostility towards the opposite sex, you’re gonna love this one! Especially if you’re cursing the way Hallmark shoves Valetine’s Day down your throat year after year.

For the second in our “Hip-Hop History: The Producers” mix series we present Organized Noize. Best known for producing almost all the beats on the first Outkast and Goodie Mob records, the trio of Rico Wade, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown also crafted huge commercial hits for TLC, En Vogue, and Ludacris. Their catalog of underground classics for the entire Dungeon Family runs deep. We give you all of that, plus lesser-known songs by Joi, Brandy, Mista. This mix could have easily been twice as long!

Special extended edition with a couple of bonus tracks below:

#TBT – Rub Radio – Best of 2 Chainz

#TBT this week is a look back at the Rub Radio we threw together with a mix of all our favorite 2 Chainz verses (at the time…2017 was lit with tunes from the artist formally known as Titty Boi). This mix goes from his first big hit with Playaz Circle in 2007 all the way through his solo records and collabos with DJ Mustard, Kanye, Drake and Major Lazer. This one deserves a strong revisit, especially with it being a new year and it’s cold AF outside.
