#TBT – DJ Ayres – Twelves 12″ Live Vinyl Mix

#TBT this week to DJ Ayres and the all vinyl mix he did for Southern Hospitality back in 2009 for their world renown Twelves 12: Live Vinyl Mix Series. The series was based on the premise of picking 12 of your favorite 12″s and laying it down live. Ayres went in with classics from Fonda Rae, Alicia Myers, Three Times Dope, Nu-Yorican Soul, RCMP, U.P.I. and more. Revisit this killer mix in full above.

TBT this week takes us back 30 years (jeez that’s a long time) to our history of Hip-Hop mix from 1987. Lots of years can be arguably the best years in Hip-Hop. ’87 may not be THAT year but with the debut of N.W.A. along with outstanding releases from EPMD, The Jungle Brothers, Kool G Rap, Public Enemy, LL Cool J and Eric B & Rakim…it was certainly a fantastic year for Rap. Stream this mix loaded with classics in full above and cop the free download below.

#TBT – Rub Radio – January 2014

#TBT this week comes from the Rub Radio archives. 3 years ago for 2014 definitely doesn’t sound like that long ago. It’s light years in internet time though. Luckily the ears of Ayres of Eleven are keen to sounds that stick around. And there’s a few tracks from this mix holding strong in DJ sets to this day. Kid Ink, Yo Gotti, Busta w/ Q-Tip and Beyonce all stand out here. Inclusions here from future big names like Baauer, Tensnake & Gorgon City don’t hurt either. Revisit this one in full above with the download below.

#TBT – DJ Ayres – Best Of Jay-Z Mixtape

Dj Ayres Best Of Jay Z Mixtape

One of our favorite rappers ever, Jay-Z, was born on December 4th, 1969. This now makes him now 47 years old. To honor young Hov getting ‘oh so close’ to that half century mark, we look back to a mix DJ Ayres made back in 2009 with a stack of his favorite Jay-Z tunes.

Here is what Ayres had to say back when he released this classic….

Here are a bunch of my favorite Jay-Z songs, mostly album cuts with a few freestyles and secret joints thrown in for good measure. Since Jay “retired” and came back, his music hasn’t sounded as urgent or hungry to me. He sounds like he’s coasting along, so I wanted to go back and pull out a bunch of his music that made you bob your head, marvel at his flow, puff out your chest, or even raise the little hairs on the back of your neck. The feelings you got from songs like “Where I’m From,” “D’Evils,” “1-900-Hustler” and “You Don’t Know.” Not included: #1 singles you’ve heard a million times, lazy one-take flows, lyrics about inventing the button-down shirt, songs dissing rappers who would later be signed to Jay-Z’s label, and songs produced by Eminem.

#TBT – DJ Eleven – Live From The Do-Over 8/11/13

TBT this week is an hour and a half of incredibly funky music from DJ Eleven Live at The Do-Over LA in August of 2013. Easily one of the most famous parties on the planet, Eleven brought it like he always does. Classics and new bangers from that Summer pepper this mix in a relenting assault. Stream in full above and let warm weather vibes give you a hug on this Thursday in November.

TBT today to our History of Hip-Hop Mix from 1997. This year is easily identified as a cornerstone year of golden era hip-hop. Some of the greats laid down some bonafied classics in this 12 month period and they are clearly represented in this mix. Biggie flexed with the release of “Life After Death” right after he was lost to a senseless murder. Wu Tang returned with their second full length as fans went full blown nutso. Gang Starr dropped another classic LP. Master P solidified a full blown No Limit movement with the release of “Ghetto D”. Mase, MF Doom, The Beatnuts, Redman and more solidified their place in the scene with top shelf tunes as well. Check the mix in full below by stream or download.
