DJ Riz Live at The Rub Pts 1 & 2

July marked the 11th anniversary of The Rub. Ayres & Eleven have a history of bringing in special guests to their party, but this time was extra special, since they brought out DJ Riz – world renowned for his classic “Live from Brooklyn” mixtape. He played his set at breakneck speed, cramming in 100s of songs ranging from hip hop, reggae, funk, soul, classics, trap, and much more.  DJ Eleven said it best – “If I hadn’t witnessed it, I wouldn’t have believed these Riz sets were really live.  Fucking incredible.”

Hot and fresh out the kitchen, it’s The Rub Remixed!

The Rub’s first EP of original music was released in June, and the duo (DJ Eleven and DJ Ayres) enlisted a handful of their favorite producers to remix the four songs.  Inspired by the legendary Brooklyn party, The Rub Remixed is extremely eclectic, from boom bap hip-hop to rave anthems to chill out vibes.

Marco Polo brings a 90s rap aesthetic to “Feel You,” enlisting Lil Fame from M.O.P. to add some Brooklyn grime to complement Misun’s smoky singing.  German dancehall dons So Shifty lift the Natalie Storm feature “Dutty Gyal” to high energy carnival Soca levels, while XXXChange (T&A) keeps the electro feel of the original track but raves it out.  Oakland’s Trackademicks (Fools Gold) smooths things out with his “Black & White” remix, delivering notes of  80s R&B and Bay slaps.  Michna’s (Ghostly International) “At Night” remix is deep and lo-fi, like Afrika Bambaata scoring a Michael Mann film.

Go to The Rub website to download the original The Rub EP for free along with The Rub’s brand new mix for The Fader, and don’t miss their monthly bash at The Bell House, where they are celebrating their 11 year anniversary this summer.

The Rub July Flyer

After we released “Dutty Gyal” with Natalie Storm, our first choice for remixers was So Shifty, and fuck, they smashed it! The OG was fairly electro-y, and So Shifty turned it into a huge Soca-pop jam. Follow them on Soundcloud and Twitter and be sure to get their EP on Mixpak and also get up on JR Blender if you aren’t already, this shit is the highest quality Caribbean remixes that money can’t buy.

FOTR: DJ Riz

Saturday is our 11 year anniversary but truth be told we’ve been looking for an excuse to book DJ Riz at The Rub for a long time. The Crooklyn Clan founder has been a huge influence on our DJing since, well, basically since we started DJing. Easily in our top 5 NYC DJs of all time. Why? First of all:

And of course:

(part 2 starts at 0:16:)

And if you don’t know, now you know:

That’s just his old shit! Riz continues to tear shit up all over the world, so we’re really lucky he’ll be stepping onto The Rub stage this Saturday. All we can tell you is to get there early!

Feel You (Marco Polo Remix ft. Misun & Lil Fame)

Here’s the first joint from The Rub Remixed EP (July 30). Marco Polo takes Misun back to the 90s and Lil Fame (M.O.P.) jumps on for a guest verse.

This is The Rub’s first ever release of original music, with vocals from Natalie Storm, Misun, Tatiana Owens and Bigg Base. It’s super varied, from 70 BPM deep 808 vibes all the way up to 130 BPM dancehall / bass music, some soul and some rap and some pop. Kind of like a Rub party! The EP is exclusively on iTunes this week, then it will be in full release Wednesday June 19th, both for free on The Rub website and for sale on all digital outlets.

With their self-titled EP, The Rub, the duo behind the monthly party that the Village Voice deemed NYC’s best, release four new songs that, in the spirit of the party, bring the heat across genre. Although their It’s the Motherfuckin’ Remix mixtape series received praise in outlets like Spin, Pitchfork, and MTV, The Rub EP is the group’s first release of original music.

Where opener “Feel You” places D.C. singer Misun over an electronic soul track worthy of Portishead, “Dutty Gal” (featuring Natalie Storm) increases the BPMs and lowers the bass, delivering a peak hour electro-dancehall rattler in the vein of DJ Zinc and Major Lazer. “Black & White,” meanwhile, is a radio-ready NYC rap track with hard verses from Bronx newcomer Bigg Base and a big hook from Tatiana Owens, and instrumental closer “At Night” offers uneasy late night ambience with deep bass and rolling 808s that recall the work of producers like SBTRKT and Ryan Hemsworth.

In the coming weeks expect a Fader mix (June 18), a remix EP (mid July), and more sweaty nights at The Rub, where DJs Ayres and Eleven will keep you dancing early into the morning (every last Saturday at the Bell House).
