DJ Shiftee on Rub Radio

Screen shot 2011-02-11 at 10.20.10 AM

DJ Shiftee takes a break from winning multiple DMC world championships to talk to Rub Radio about gold turntables, teaching the youths, and the rap group Onyx. Shiftee then steps up to the decks for a mind-bending dubstep set, chock full of skills. And like we always do at this time, The Rub plays a mix of everything from disco to hip-hop to house to latin funk.

The Freshest

TheRub_2-5-11

This Saturday we’ll be joined at Southpaw by The Freshest.  All four dudes are incredible DJs, and obscenely overqualified to play the basement at The Rub, but that’s how we do!  For a preview of Marvel, Rico Uno, Kutcorners and Seko, listen to the madness that is their What the F mixtape:

Vinyl Mondays: Meez 7″s

Kenny Meez (Federation Sound) released a handful of great medleys and refixes in the late 90s which made it a whole lot easier to run dancehall for hip-hop crowds.  These 7″s had me chasing down all the originals, I remember this is definitely the first place I heard Joseph Stepper “Wife” and Cobra “Gundalero.”  Recently Kenny sent out links for these records and gave me the blessing to share them, so here you go:

Sade – Love is Stronger Than Pride (Meez remix) (mediafire)

Kenny Meez – Old School Medley (mediafire)

L-Boogie – That Ting (Dance Hall Mix) (mediafire)

Faith Evans – Love Like This (Meez remix) (mediafire)

I start of every week with Vinyl Monday on the Flashing Lights blog.  Go download tons of classic and rare dance music ripped straight from my record collection!

Rub Radio welcomes New York house hero Nick Chacona this month. Nick tells about his early days in roots reggae, his house and disco projects on Mood, Hector Works and Wurst, and spinning in a military truck turned DJ booth in Jamaica! And of course he joins us on the turntables as we play all types of joints from hip-hop to revival soul to dubstep to funk and plenty of exclusives.

A Year of The Rub

Kenny Rodriguez took pictures at The Rub every month for the last year and made an album with his 100 favorite photos.  See the whole thing here.

Good People

New Year’s Eve was amazing, total fucking roadblock, sold out with ticket scalpers outside, due in no small part to us getting the top pick in New York Magazine. “Sometimes you just want to hang with good people who know good music. Lucky for you there’s DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, and Cosmo Baker, a.k.a Brooklyn collective the Rub.”

Huge thanks to MeanRed, Good Peoples, Rich Medina, Evil Dee, Prince Klassen, Rok One, and everyone who came out and partied with us. I can’t imagine a more fun way to ring in the New Year.

Encore

Best Party To Take Anyone To: The Rub

Once you’ve been to the Rub as many times as I have, you start to pick up on the little things that make the party flow just so. You’ll notice that of the three resident DJs, Cosmo Baker is the showman, often dancing over his mixer and chatting with the crowd over his signature funk-heavy sets. Or that DJ Eleven, the strongest technically (and most unassuming despite the fact that he looms over his fellow partners), has the keenest ear for r&b and dancehall. DJ Ayres is the friendliest (and funniest) of the bunch, and regardless of his ventures into dance music, his selection constantly reminds us that he’s a hip-hop nerd at heart. In fact, hip-hop is the constant of the party, and the one of the many reasons that half of Brooklyn can’t seem to stay away from the monthly throw down at Southpaw.
