Posted: September 19, 2016 Filed under: Rub Radio | Tags: Rub RadioFavorite Things Vol. 1 edition of Rub Radio is a new theme where we’re going to do mixes with some of our favorite records of all time. The idea is to approach making a mix like you would back in high school, where you put on songs you love and want to share with a crush, or your best friend. We’ll each be doing them and likely have some guests do mixes like this too. Hope you enjoy!

FOTR this week is NY DJ Dirtyfinger. He’s a staple of the BK DJ scene and seems to always be rocking somewhere extremely fun whether it’s House of Yes, Tender Trap, El Cortez or even overseas backing up the one and only Zebra Katz. His presence on the party circuit is consistent week in and week out and it always seems to be where it’s vibes over everything else. He got a chance to drop a set for RINSE in France earlier this year and you can check that out in full below. Click some links and give him a follow on the socials as well.

TNN is back after a week off last week due to the Labor Day holiday. The fall flood of new music is most definitely on though and the quality already seems like it’s going to be super high this final quarter of 2016. First up, we’ve got a hypnotic tune off of Travis Scott’s excellent new LP. “Goosebumps” stands out on this release and that’s not just because Kendrick Lamar comes through with his usually scene stealing guest verse. Second, we’ve got a Zack de la Rocha solo sighting and he’s on an El-P beat and sounds hungry. This is an exciting equation. Lastly, we’ve got a new one from D.R.A.M. who’s just fired off another super addictive song. Stream all 3 in full below.
#TBT – Cullen Enn Shares Scottie B’s Early Bmore Record Collection
Posted: September 8, 2016 Filed under: TBT | Tags: Cullen Enn, Scottie B, TBT
TBT this week is a bit outside the norm but a completely welcome flashback to some influential records from a great time period in music. Our bud Cullen in Baltimore, who was a great member of the old Hollerboard and been connected in the music scene for a long time, shared a thread on Tuesday via Facebook that gave a close up look into the record collection of Scottie B. Those records shared in this thread were the cornerstones to what would ultimately become Baltimore Club music. Scottie B, and a number of other Bmore djs, took these records and mixed them together to create a completely brand new sound. This thread was just loaded with amazing tunes and here’s 4 favorites linked below. Enjoy!

FOTR this week is Nick Hook. He’s one of the most connected and respected producer types out there and his resume is pretty amazing over the last decade or so. Last week he announced his latest single and forthcoming LP on Fool’s Gold Records along with an extensive fall tour to support the record. He’s always been a bit of a chameleon with his music and this single featuring Novelist below hints at more of the same. Check out the video, be on the lookout for the LP and make sure to catch Nick when he comes through your city.

#TBT – DJ Ayres – Cats, Snakes, Chickens, Ducks, Elderly People & Twerkers (Mannie Fresh Mixtape)
Posted: September 1, 2016 Filed under: DJ Ayres, TBT | Tags: DJ Ayres, TBTTBT this week comes courtesy DJ Ayres and his 28 min megamix of all things Mannie Fresh. We’re approaching the 5 year anniversary of the special night celebrating the catalog of Mannie Fresh at DROM and all these tunes still sound completely outstanding. You’ve got some token Big Tymers classics, Young Jeezy’s breakout single, a forever DJ weapon from Lil Wayne and so many underrated catalog anthems in this mix. This one definitely deserves the revisit and maybe even multiple listens as we head into Labor Day weekend. Get your roll on indeed.

FOTR this week is DJ Nu-Mark. He’s a past guest of The Rub way back in the Southpaw days and his time with Jurassic 5 should be familiar to most all readers of this website. The thing that’s always set him apart from other DJs is his sheer ability to use unusual tools and tricks to show new and creative ways of flexing on a “dj” set. Whether it’s rocking fisher price toys, tiny record players or even a rubberband on a tone arm…Nu-Mark is just a different breed of party rocker. Also doesn’t hurt that his selections are top notch as well. 3 great examples of his prowess are below with his recent birthday Zodiac mix set for the Leo’s, his recent feature mix on BBC 6 and his set on the tiny decks for DJ City back in May. All are immediately worth watching / pressing play.

We’ve got a handful of cool new joints this week for TNN as we put a close to August (i.e. Summer) and start to officially say what’s up to Labor Day weekend, football season and (*fingers crossed*) cooler temperatures. First up this week is a brand new one from Migos with Lil Uzi Vert and Metro Boomin in tow. It’s as dope as that lineup would suggest, regardless of what all the old heads are stirring up online about the new jacks in rap these days. Next we have a new collaboration from Kaytranada and Goldlink, who’ve definitely established a great chemistry that’s on full display here again. Finally, we’ve got a remix to a underrated summer jam from Starrah. The remix has added Kehlani to the fold and provides a definitive winning formula. Stream all three tunes in full below.
