Hip-Hop History 2000 Mix

This summer we go full steam ahead on The Rub’s “History of Hip-Hop” series, starting with the year 2000.  For each mix we choose our favorite records from a year and mix in them in rapidfire Rub fashion.  If you missed 1979-1999, you can download all those shows from the archives.HOHH-2000

Rub Radio May: Star Eyes

stareyes

Our friend Star Eyes joins us this month on Rub Radio, throwing down a fierce DJ set live at Bad Manor and talking to us about raves, her former job as editor of XLURB8R magazine, and her new job playing filthy bass music all over the world with her crew, Trouble and Bass.  And as always, the Rub guys play a bunch of our favorite jams.

DJ Eleven Live at Reunión

Special shouts to the homie DJ Day for having me through his great Thursday night party in Palm Springs the night before Coachella started. Being the savvy dude he is, Day had the foresight to record the night. Through the magic of technical difficulties & a little careful editing, he was forced to whittle it down to only the good 40 minutes of my set. Ha. While I’m disappointed to not be able to go back to hear his set & Gaslamp Killer’s, it’s great to have a live recording which captures the actual feel of the party.

Head to DJ Day’s site to check it out & make sure to spend some time peeping out all the Day recommends. His taste in music and skills as a DJ & producer are unparalleled.

Fordinho Thre3style Video

Red Bull Thre3 Style Calgary DJ Fordinho winning set from Fokus Productions on Vimeo.

Tonight at The Rub we have guest dj  Fordinho, who besides being our good friend also won the Red Bull Thre3style battle for Calgary.  Of course this dovetails nicely with the fact that next week at Southpaw we are spinning / hosting the first ever Brooklyn Thre3style battle.

Also appearing tonight will be DJ Pump, whose dj name betrays his penchant for playing music while wearing ladies’ high heel shoes.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.

The only video I could find for Pump is this 10 year old footage one of him cutting up James Brown records.  This is presumably before the whole cross-dressing thing.

Tonight, Saturday, May 1: The Rub at Southpaw with Cosmo Baker, DJ Ayres, DJ Eleven, Fordinho & DJ Pumps

Next Saturday, May 8: Red Bull Thre3style competition at Southpaw with Boogie Blind, DJ Chela, Jayceeoh, MomaSam French, Sammy Slice, Terry Urban,Vin Sol, hosted by Greg Nice.  The Rub DJ set 1 AM – 4 AM.

4.30 – Skip-the-line Tickets

We’ve got 100 skip-the-line tickets for tomorrow night’s party and they’re going very fast. $15 (all in…no fees) jumps you right past a long wait in line, regardless of when you show up to The Bell House. Otherwise, The Rub line is always a roadblock by 11:00 pm. So if you don’t want to wait and don’t jump at this deal, you’re unfortunately stuck having to come out early to avoid the chaos. Special guest this month is DJ A.Vee. See you all tomorrow night.

So our good friend DJ Anonymous is in town from Helsinki this week… Well actually he’s been trying to get to New York for the past 2 weeks but that damn volcano was fucking up the program. But he finally made it and so we’re having a last minute throwdown with the dude. He’s a great homie, and the first supporter of The Rub in Finland (which is one of my favorite places to play in the world. So this Wednesday we’re gonna go all in, all vinyl, at the Down South Lounge which is the basement of Southpaw. Nothing of great music, great people, cheap drinks and no cover charge so hope to see you out.

I’ve been meaning to do a new hip-hop mix for a while, but it kept getting swallowed up by mixes for our other Rub Radio show on Scion broadband.  But I got a few months ahead on the other show, so I had some time to bang this out.  Tons of new shit I’m feeling right now, and I threw in a few non-hip-hop selections to give it some flavor, but you know I had to start it off with Gangstarr.  Tracklist after the jump.

RIP GURU

Listen to our friend Matthew Africa’s Gangstarr mix, and read Cosmo’s thoughts about Guru and Gangstarr.

Matthew Africa – Got To Be The Sureshot
Rest In Power Keith “Guru” Elam (July 17th, 1966 – April 20th, 2010)

My morning regiment is pretty consistent day in and day out. I wake up, hit the bathroom, go into the kitchen and get the coffee started, and not so long afterwards that I’ll pick up my phone to see what messages I missed during the evening. Needless to say the news of Guru’s leaving this planet was one of the first pieces of news that I got this morning. Shocked, and saddened, I said to my wife “Jesus, Guru has died.” A few minutes later as we sat on the couch, she turned to me and, with tears in her eyes, said to me “This is so sad. It was ‘Step In The Arena’ that made me realize I was a real hip-hop ‘head’…”
