FOTR: Cipha Sounds

#FOTR (Friend of The Rub) this week is our headlining guest for Friday’s The Rub at Verboten, DJ Cipha Sounds. If you don’t already know, Cipha is a true hip-hop legend in NY. Whether it’s via his serious DJ skills, his long run as a personality at Hot 97 or his various A & R work for a number of record labels (Def Jam, Rawkus, Star Trak), he’s left his mark in so many ways. As he continues to expand his brand now into stand up comedy and improv, Cipha stops through the booth at Verboten to bless us with what promises to be a DJ set to remember. Check out his amazing Tribute to ’93 hip-hop mix below and make sure to catch his set this Friday night.

11.9 – That New New

Even in the internet age of artists seemingly releasing music at will these days, this time of year always sees a crazy flood of new content and we frequently see it from some heavy hitters. This past week was no different. We saw a surprise new LP from Rustie and got a first glimpse of a new record from Santigold. Add in a spicy piece of melodic kuduro from Ckrono & Slesh via Enchufada and you’ve got this week’s #TNN (That New New). Enjoy some tasty audio treats from all 3 below.

Escort – Animal Nature

Escort-Animal-Nature-560x560

Escort’s new album Animal Nature just dropped and (surprise surprise) it’s phenomenal. Here’s a link to iTunes so you can buy it immediately. Their evolution over the years has been a real treat to follow, from explorations in sweet disco to early 80s to house, all filtered through their impeccable songwriting and arrangements. Shit is just fun.

A couple of summers ago we did a party together at The Bell House, and leading up to that, a mixtape. If you missed it, there’s no better time than to revisit.

11.2 – That New New

Hey friends. It’s been a minute since our last #TNN (That New New) and while we’ve been collectively very busy, there’s certainly been no shortage in exciting and interesting music being released. We’ve actually got 3 recent tunes to feature for you…all from relatively bigger industry names as well. It is very much 4th quarter now, so the big guns are out there firing. Here’s new ones from Grimes, Chance The Rapper (with some production help from Lido) and an official new Blood Orange sighting. Enjoy!
