#TBT DJ Ayres – Mixpak FM 025

TBT this week is an incredibly diverse and banging mix from DJ Ayres that dropped via the Mixpak crew back in 2011. As an entry into their long running mix series, Mixpak FM 25 is loaded with all sorts of tropical and bashment vibes over the course of 70 minutes and runs through a ridiculous tracklist that sounds very fresh 4 years later. Whether it’s classic jungle, roots era dubstep and vintage dancehall grooves or even the moombahton and tropical bass sounds that were very relevant at the time…this mix is still quite the summertime turnup. Stream and download are both available on this one below.

FOTR Pt 2: Nadastrom

FOTR (Friends of The Rub) this week is Nadastrom. And even though we featured them earlier in the year, they are quietly having a huge 2015 release wise. The finally put out their debut album back in February, but have wasted no time in getting out a whole entirely different project that also acts as a mini-album tribute to an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Yeah…you read that right and it’s also a very classic episode of the show as well. The Life and Times of Raphael De La Ghetto is a sample heavy release with sick interpretations of hip-house and heady funk sprinkled with elements of the show and it’s an incredibly fun release that just recently dropped that we think is worth the listen. Stream it in full below.

7.13 – That New New

If you’ve been following our ‘That New New’ (#TNN) weekly column, you’ve probably noticed the focus has been on one particular song/video/release at a time. While that’s all very cool and all, the real story is that there’s been a steady flow of music we’re all collectively into. Starting today, we’re going to make an effort to feature more music in our weekly #TNN section in hopes that we can effectively share more of the stuff that we’re into. Jumping right into it today, we’ve got a Felix Snow produced tune from newcomer Kiiara, a new school R&B gem from A.CHAL and a choice cut from Vince Staples fire new double album. Dive in friends. We’ll be doing our best to keep up this steady flow of fresh content and hope you enjoy all the new music.

#TBT DJ Eleven – 50 Minutes of Fresh

As one of the most prolific producers ever in rap music, Mannie Fresh’s resume of tunes is relatively insane. His reign as the go-to in-house guy at Cash Money Records is arguably responsible for starting the careers of Lil Wayne, Juvenile, BG…as well as his own group in Big Tymers. While that Cash Money ship has long since sailed, Mannie Fresh has collaborated with a who’s who of the rap world and imagine my excitement when I came across Eleven’s mix from 2009 last night showcasing so much of this stellar catalog. This one is a must revisit ASAP. Stream and download are below.

FOTR: Statik Selektah

Veteran dj/producer Statik Selektah is our FOTR (Friend of The Rub) this week as he celebrates the release of his latest solo album, Lucky 7. It’s hard to argue that there’s been anyone more busy in hip-hop the last 7 or so years than Statik. Multiple radio show residencies (including his current stay at Shade45), 7 star-studded solo albums and too many collaborative projects to really count have all contributed to this crazy hustle. With features from the likes of Bun B, Royce Da 5’9″, Action Bronson, Joey Badass, Sean Price and so many others, Lucky 7 hits stores today and you can cop it here. Stream 3 tunes from the project below as well.

The Internet Ft. Kaytranda – Girl

Los Angeles based groove oriented crew The Internet stepped to the plate very recently with their 3rd LP, Ego Death. While the whole album is smooth as silk, we’ve selected their collaboration with Kaytranada as our #TNN (That New New) feature this week. This almost 7 min excursion into head nod worthy funk and R&B is ear candy from start to finish and their overall vibe balances that fine line between very unique all while remaining incredibly familiar. R&B seems to be in good hands with The Internet and this whole album comes highly recommended. Check out “Girl” streaming in full below.

#TBT DJ Ayres & JD – Houston For Dummies

Houston rap is amazing. It was great for a long time before it ever broke into the mainstream and it’s still extremely rad to this day. For #TBT this week, we revisit the mix Ayres and JD put together to showcase the history of the area’s sound right as it’s time in the limelight was at it’s peak. Digging deep into the crates, Houston For Dummies showcases classics from bonafied legends such as UGK, The Geto Boys and Devin The Dude and regional anthems from the likes of E.S.G., Big Mike, Lil O and many more. Basically, let this be your guide to one of the coolest scenes in rap to ever come about.

FOTR: Keys N Krates

Canadian trio Keys N Krates have been longtime ‘Friends of The Rub’ so featuring them this week for FOTR was an easy choice, if not an overdue one. These dudes have been diving into the live music combined with dj oriented sounds and electronic music vibes since all the way back in 2008 and the past few years have really seen the project take off. World travels and festivals have become common place and as have successful tunes and videos like their recent win at the Much Music Video Awards for Best EDM/Dance Video for “Keep It 100”, their collaboration with fellow Rub homie Grandtheft. They recently released their first single of 2015 as well in “Save Me” featuring Katy B on vocal duty. Stream it now and clicks some links so you can stay connected with the crew.

Nef The Pharaoh – Big Tymin’

Although Nef The Pharaoh’s “Big Tymin'” has been out for a minute and already became local Bay Area hit, it’s taken on a new life as we’re smack in the middle of 2015 and everyone seems to be looking for that “song of the summer”. This week’s #TNN (That New New) is giving some added shine to this tune and Nef, who’s now signed with E-40’s Sic-Wid-It label. The title alone suggests classic era Cash Money feels and that’s exactly what you get here, with some Bay Area flair of course. The effortless flow from Nef is incredibly fun and it’s easy to tell why this tune continues to gain legs. Is this the rap tune of the summer? Who knows really, but it’s definitely in heavy rotation around these parts.
