TBT this week as we go into Rub Saturday and we look back to our Hip-History Mix from 1999. Real question here: Is there a year in the last 20 years of hip-hop that had as many forever anthems drop than ’99? This mix is loaded with so many of them from start to finish from the likes of Nas, Mobb Deep, DMX, Dr. Dre, Trick Daddy, Juvenile, Hot Boys, The Beatnuts, Jay-Z, Nelly, Q-Tip, Black Rob and this list goes on when you dive into that next level of more “conscious” bangers with Dead Prez, Mos Def, Gang Starr, Common, The Roots, Slum Village, Lootpack, Handsome Boy Modeling School, MF Doom, etc all bringing massive heatrocks that you still hear out in clubs (if you go support dope djs that is). Like 1999 may not be the best year ever for hip-hop, but it might be the most important ever for DJ weaponry. Revisit this mix and keep a tally how many anthems from ’99 get dropped this Saturday at The Bell House.

FOTR: Sake One

FOTR this week is Sake One. He’s a DJ veteran from the Bay Area and, along with Eleven, a founder of the (((Local 1200))) crew. He’s been a guest at The Rub more times than anyone else and will be back with us to rock the front room again this Saturday, August 26th. A self-proclaimed musical servant to the people, he’s played all over the world and we’re incredibly stoked to have him back with us at The Bell House. Check a couple mixes and clink some links below to get familiar and we’ll see you all this Saturday night!

8.22 – That New New

Last week of August and summer is definitely holding onto it’s last few breathes. And per usual, new releases were super eventful for TNN. Like 35 new songs from Frank Ocean eventful. 4 years and weird delay after continuous silence on targeted release days/months and all of the sudden, we’ve got a lot to digest. First up this week is the visually stunning video for his single “Nikes”, which is just one example of this flood of new music from him. Next, we’ve got a great new one from Florida’s Twelve’len, who’s absolutely on his own thing and “Star Dust” feels like it could become an anthem with the right push. Lastly, and her debut release, we have Lully with “Slow Ds”, a glimpse of what future pop/indie/soul/dance music can sound like if listeners ever find their balance between the easily digestible and challenging. Stream/view all 3 in full below.

#TBT – The Rub – Under The Boardwalk

#TBT this week is about as throwback as it gets as we revisit the Rub Radio mix, Under The Boardwalk, from Summer of 2014. This mix contains some of the most classic songs ever made and Ayres and Eleven put it together as an official send off to summer. While it seems that summer is still going strong, kids are getting ready for their return to school and the weather FINALLY cooled off a touch in NY. There’s nothing on this mix released after 1968 just to give you a perspective on how timeless this music really is. Revisit this nostalgia blast from the past below.

FOTR: DJ Still Life

FOTR this week is Bay Area native and Brooklyn resident DJ Still Life. His versatile ways on the decks have spread all throughout the city and is easily a favorite of ours when he’s on the selections. He spent time at the legendary East Village Radio (RIP) and is a resident at the annual summer pop-up series Str8 West Coastin’ with our own DJ Eleven. They are closing out Summer 2016 this Saturday at Project Parlor and you can RSVP for the festivities RIGHT HERE. Check out Still Life’s recent (415) Area Code Mix for Okayplayer and links to his socials below. And make sure to come through this Saturday!

8.15 – That New New

Man it’s freaking hot in NY and air conditioning is truly a god send. Summer is on it’s last legs though and we’re starting to switch into the fall release schedule, with some massive records due very soon. This past week still had some great stuff hit our radar, per usual. Sometimes all you need to do is dig a bit (i.e. click some links). First up is some new stuff from De La Soul with a really dope feature from Little Dragon. Next we’ve got a collab from Porter Robinson & Madeon, two of the only EDM dudes who actually appear like they want to mature their sound. Last, we’ve got a new one from Larry June’s latest super solid EP. Stream all 3 in full below.

TBT this week is a look back to last year when we dropped our Best of New York tribute mix showcasing our picks for the best in NY music for the last 15 years. Combing through all this great music to narrow it down was definitely a challenge but a fun one at that. Whether it’s Busta, Jay, A$ap Rocky, Santigold, The Rapture, Metro Area or TV on the Radio (or so many others), there’s been such a healthy contribution of inspiring music from NY based artists in the last 15 years and change. Coming up on the year anniversary of this mix and bringing it back today for the revisit. Stream in full below and download is below.

FOTR: 2¢

FOTR this week is 2¢, the DJ and production duo of our buds Four Color Zack and DJ Craze. They’ve dropped some cool things under that name over the last couple years, including a couple of really inspiring turntablist mixtapes. This past week though saw the unveiling of their debut production EP, appropriately titled Making Change, and it’s well worth checking out. They’ve also announced their first tour together as 2¢ coming up in Australia this September. Check out the EP, the tour dates and their socials below.
