#TBT – The Rub – History of Hip-Hop 2009
Posted: September 29, 2016 Filed under: History of Hip-Hop, TBT | Tags: History Of Hip-Hop, TBTListen to The History of Hip Hop 2009 byBrooklyn Radio on hearthis.at
TBT this week to 2009 and The Rub’s History of Hip-Hop from that wonderful year. Uptempo party rap had become very much a thing with Pitbull, LMFAO, Kid Sister and Chelley but the South’s imprint was so strong that one-hit wonders on the pop breakthrough tip had become very common place (see Hurricane Chris, GS Boyz, New Boyz, etc). Jay-Z had his first #1 hit ever with “Empire State of Mind”. Lil’ Wayne and Young Money ruled the airwaves completely. And Drake was this new star from that camp that everyone still new better as Wheelchair Jimmy. Most everyone was just surprised any rapper from Canada could matter on the charts. Revisit this mix in full above and peep the tracklist below.

#TBT – Cullen Enn Shares Scottie B’s Early Bmore Record Collection
Posted: September 8, 2016 Filed under: TBT | Tags: Cullen Enn, Scottie B, TBT
TBT this week is a bit outside the norm but a completely welcome flashback to some influential records from a great time period in music. Our bud Cullen in Baltimore, who was a great member of the old Hollerboard and been connected in the music scene for a long time, shared a thread on Tuesday via Facebook that gave a close up look into the record collection of Scottie B. Those records shared in this thread were the cornerstones to what would ultimately become Baltimore Club music. Scottie B, and a number of other Bmore djs, took these records and mixed them together to create a completely brand new sound. This thread was just loaded with amazing tunes and here’s 4 favorites linked below. Enjoy!
#TBT – DJ Ayres – Cats, Snakes, Chickens, Ducks, Elderly People & Twerkers (Mannie Fresh Mixtape)
Posted: September 1, 2016 Filed under: DJ Ayres, TBT | Tags: DJ Ayres, TBTTBT this week comes courtesy DJ Ayres and his 28 min megamix of all things Mannie Fresh. We’re approaching the 5 year anniversary of the special night celebrating the catalog of Mannie Fresh at DROM and all these tunes still sound completely outstanding. You’ve got some token Big Tymers classics, Young Jeezy’s breakout single, a forever DJ weapon from Lil Wayne and so many underrated catalog anthems in this mix. This one definitely deserves the revisit and maybe even multiple listens as we head into Labor Day weekend. Get your roll on indeed.

#TBT – The Rub – Hip-Hop History 1999
Posted: August 25, 2016 Filed under: History of Hip-Hop, TBT | Tags: History Of Hip-Hop, TBTListen to The History of Hip Hop 1999 byBrooklyn Radio on hearthis.at
TBT this week as we go into Rub Saturday and we look back to our Hip-History Mix from 1999. Real question here: Is there a year in the last 20 years of hip-hop that had as many forever anthems drop than ’99? This mix is loaded with so many of them from start to finish from the likes of Nas, Mobb Deep, DMX, Dr. Dre, Trick Daddy, Juvenile, Hot Boys, The Beatnuts, Jay-Z, Nelly, Q-Tip, Black Rob and this list goes on when you dive into that next level of more “conscious” bangers with Dead Prez, Mos Def, Gang Starr, Common, The Roots, Slum Village, Lootpack, Handsome Boy Modeling School, MF Doom, etc all bringing massive heatrocks that you still hear out in clubs (if you go support dope djs that is). Like 1999 may not be the best year ever for hip-hop, but it might be the most important ever for DJ weaponry. Revisit this mix and keep a tally how many anthems from ’99 get dropped this Saturday at The Bell House.

#TBT this week is about as throwback as it gets as we revisit the Rub Radio mix, Under The Boardwalk, from Summer of 2014. This mix contains some of the most classic songs ever made and Ayres and Eleven put it together as an official send off to summer. While it seems that summer is still going strong, kids are getting ready for their return to school and the weather FINALLY cooled off a touch in NY. There’s nothing on this mix released after 1968 just to give you a perspective on how timeless this music really is. Revisit this nostalgia blast from the past below.

#TBT – The Rub – Best of New York 2000-2015
Posted: August 11, 2016 Filed under: Rub Dates, TBT | Tags: Rub Radio, TBT, the rubTBT this week is a look back to last year when we dropped our Best of New York tribute mix showcasing our picks for the best in NY music for the last 15 years. Combing through all this great music to narrow it down was definitely a challenge but a fun one at that. Whether it’s Busta, Jay, A$ap Rocky, Santigold, The Rapture, Metro Area or TV on the Radio (or so many others), there’s been such a healthy contribution of inspiring music from NY based artists in the last 15 years and change. Coming up on the year anniversary of this mix and bringing it back today for the revisit. Stream in full below and download is below.

#TBT this week goes to DJ Eleven and the 3rd volume in his Soul series. Per usual, Eleven is diving in deep from an era perspective while maintaining a very fluid vibe to appropriately keep the soulful feel at a high level. This 3rd installment features such a wide array of artists and sounds but mixes it all so tastefully. There aren’t many mixtapes where Trick Daddy and Toto sit so comfortably next to Marvin Gaye and Darius Rucker. Yeah, you read all that right. Sit back, kick off your shoes and revisit this one below today with a forecast heavy on all the Soul.
