The History of Hip Hop 2004 by Brooklyn Radio on hearthis.at

TBT this week looks back 12 years to 2004 with DJ Ayres in the mix for this episode of our history of hip-hop series. You’ve got so much going on in this episode that’s so notable today it’s kind of crazy. “College Dropout” Kanye was all the rage but absolutely none of us knew what Yeezy would mean to music in 2016. Snoop swooped in with a massive comeback single with The Neptunes (of course) on the beat. Fabolous released arguably his best single ever in “Breathe”. Lil Jon fever was owning the clubs all over the country. Lil Wayne was showing signs of becoming more than just a Cash Money afterthought and just maybe he might be a dope rapper. And there was that collab album from Madlib and MF Doom blew everyone’s mind who heard it. That’s just scratching the surface on 2004 but you can revisit it all in full with the stream above and the DL below.

FOTR: DJ Spinna

FOTR this week is BK’s own DJ Spinna. As one of the biggest purveyors of all things good music on the DJ/party circuit, Spinna continues to leave his lasting impression whenever and wherever he plays. He’s also an extremely accomplished producer with a very impressive discography spread out over years of releasing music and mixes with labels like BBE, Rawkus, Nite Grooves and many others. He’s carved out a name for himself in recent years as well doing tribute nights for the likes of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and the recently deceased Prince. In honor of Prince, his birthday and his recently named “Prince Day” in his native Minnesota, Spinna will be at Good Room in BK tonight for a celebration of Prince’s life and legacy. Check that out if you’re in the area and check out a recent (almost) 3 hour marathon set from the man below.

6.6 – That New New

TNN is swinging right into June (how is it already June?!?!) and the last 7 days has kind of been like a whirl wind of big names dropping new music left and right…again. Friday saw Kanye and the G.O.O.D. music crew share an untitled demo (call it “Champions” if you want) of a huge posse cut featuring Ye, Travis Scott, Gucci Mane, Big Sean, Quavo, Yo Gotti, 2 Chainz & Desiigner. End of last week also saw the first proof that a new album from The Avalanches was actually happening as they shared “Frankie Sinatra” featuring Danny Brown and MF Doom. Wrapping it up this week is a great new 90’s flavored coming of age hybrid of a track from ROY. Stream/watch all 3 in full below.

#TBT – DJ Eleven – Ladies First

TBT this week is Eleven’s ode to the first ladies of Hip-Hop with his “Ladies First” mix from the summer of 2012. This outstanding mix of the female impulse in rap spans generations, vibes and styles…with many of these ladies being the first to break certain styles and sounds (i.e. see Roxanne Shante, Missy Elliot, M.I.A., J.J. Fad, etc). Clocking in at almost an hour, you’re guaranteed to come out feeling wowed by the influence of these powerful women. Even Iggy and Azealia sounded rad and super hungry in 2012. Revisit this killer mix from Eleven above or check the download link below.

FOTR: Jubilee

FOTR this week is Jubilee. We’ve featured her in this column before and we’re giving this Miami born/NY based dj/producer and curator another nod because she’s just dropped Part 2 of her Magic City compilation series. This musical homage to Miami is layered with all sorts of influences and genres and features the likes of Salva, Ape Drums, Addison Groove and L-Vis 1990, among many others. Ayres personal chimed in on this comp to say he likes LouisVExclusive’s “Dab Daddy” best, as it sounds like the Miami Bass side of T&A Breaks 1 thrown in a blender. And Strict Face’s “Skyway Condo” is a really pretty to end the comp – we used it to close out Rub Radio in May! Stream Magic CityII in full below or grab the DOWNLOAD.

5.30 – That New New

Hope everyone had a safe and fantastic Memorial Day weekend. Even with folks getting outside and celebrating the start of summer, the new music train doesn’t really ever stop. First off we have a new Cam’ron and Juelz Santana sighting from a little over a week ago and it sounds so classic Dipset it hurts. Second, our bud Nick Catchdubs dropped some new Jiggy Blends “for the regular party folks” this past week and there’s a couple here featured that feel immediately useful in most every dj set. Finally, we see the first official release from Recloose in 3 years with the title track from his fresh new EP on Aus Music. Stream all of them in full below.

5.27 – Skip-the-line Tickets

We’ve got 100 skip-the-line tickets for tomorrow night’s party and they’re going very fast. $15 (all in…no fees) jumps you right past a long wait in line, regardless of when you show up to The Bell House. Otherwise, The Rub line is always a roadblock by 11:00 pm. So if you don’t want to wait and don’t jump at this deal, you’re unfortunately stuck having to come out early to avoid the chaos. Special guest this month is DJ Mel! See you all tomorrow night.

FOTR: DJ Mel Pt. 2

FOTR this week again is Austin’s DJ Mel, as he’s our guest for The Rub at The Bell House this Saturday. As mentioned before, Mel’s pretty much the man in Austin, TX. Whether it’s been his Rock The Casbah 80’s themed special events, his insanely long running weekly Monday party at Nasty’s or being the official DJ for University of Texas Longhorns basketball, he’s always steady on the grind. What’s brought him to a national stage in recent years is his work DJing events for President Obama in the past and now for Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Check out Mel’s slick recent Phife/A Tribe Called Quest tribute mix and all the links to his socials below.
