Turntable Lab Interview

Pete from Turntable Lab interviewed me about the challenges of being a professional DJ and running a record label, fatherhood and asian girls.

I’m doing all sorts of stuff from crazy ass raves in Canada to hardcore hip-hop and reggae parties in Brooklyn to playing between live acts at a concert to DJing the casino bar in Vegas. It’s harder but it also keeps things interesting. I rarely take gigs that won’t be fun, just for the money – I still have to be able to “do me” but that can mean a lot of things because I love Taio Cruz “Dynamite” as much as I love Tensnake or Munchi or whatever. So it’s still engaging. And I have this thing in me, when there’s loud music and I’m in that environment, it doesn’t matter how tiring my day was with my daughter or what kind of mood I’m in, when I go on, a switch just flips in me and I’m 100% awake and focused.

Win Win, Wax Romeo and Fordinho on Rub Radio

winwin

Win Win is a supergroup who we’re lucky to be pals with. XXXChange, Ghostdad and Chris Devlin make weird awesome music and their debut album is out now! They play us a bunch of it and talk about funneling subconcious positive energy into music recordings. We’re also joined by our friends from Calgary, Wax Romeo and Fordinho, so stick around to learn exactly how far the latter can physically throw the former.

(this show ran in April of 2011)

Sampology – Two Hours of Splendour

Heavy Warmup

I’m starting a new mix series on my site called Heavy Warmup. I love this DJ slot, it’s the time of the night when people are getting their second drink, the dancefloor is just starting to fill up, and the DJ can tease the crowd with great forgotten jams and new secret weapons. So I’ve asked a bunch of my favorite DJs to record a heavy warmup mix and I’ll be posting a new one every couple of weeks on my website.

DJ Eleven – Heavy Warmup Vol 2

DJ Eleven throws down a Heavy Warmup set! Tony Toni Tone, Pharrell, Stevie Wonder, Nate Dogg and loads more of your favorite 11 PM jams, quick mixed to perfection.

DJ Ayres – Heavy Warmup Vol 1

Here is Volume 1, recorded live at Bond in Las Vegas. Expect LL Cool J, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Ruff Ryders, Madonna, Neyo, Sharon Brown, Lil Louis, Janelle Monae, Robin S and a ton of unexpected 11 PM heat. Pre-bangers!   Read the rest of this entry »

Fresh Produce

freshproduce

Tonight at The Rub we are joined by two of Boston’s finest, DJ Knife & Tommee.  They throw a great party called Fresh Produce, where we’ve all done guest sets (in fact I’ll be back up there with Nick Catchdubs on April 9). Fresh Produce is basically classic hip-hop through a 2011 lens, so you’ll hear Biggie and Ed OG next to Cee Lo and 50 Cent.  Here’s a little sample of how they rock, to get you pregaming for tonight:

Big KRIT on Rub Radio

Big K.R.I.T. drops in on Rub Radio to talk about growing up in Mississippi, his influences both on the mic and on production, and his forthcoming record on Def Jam.  As always, Cosmo, Eleven and Ayres go in hardbody on the turntables, jumping between hip-hop, funk, house and plenty of curveballs.

Free T&A / Crookers / Munchi

The Zombies for Money remix of Torro Torro “Blue Blouse” is free on RCRDLBL. EP out May 8! Listen to the whole thing on Soundcloud now.

Torro Torro – Blue Blouse by T&ARecords

Crookers remixed Munchi’s “Shottas” featuring Mr Lexx! And lucky for you they’re giving it away for free on their blog. We have a whole EP of Shottas remixes coming in the next month or so on T&A records, and you can buy the original on the Murda Sounds EP.
Munchi ft Mr Lexx – Shottas (Crookers Remix) by Crookers.net

As many of you know, Munchi suffered a seizure while on tour in Hawaii two weeks ago.  He was in a coma for 9 hours and in the hospital for 11 days.  The seizure was the result of a intracerebral hemorrhage in the left side of his brain, with no prior history of illness.  He’s doing a lot better now, out of the hospital and resting up.  Yesterday we started a fundraiser and raised over $5000, bought Munchi a flight home to Rotterdam and covered the cost of his meds.  Today we’re working on getting his hospital bills, which will surely be very high.  If you haven’t given yet, please visit his page and do what you can to help:  http://giveloop.com/help-munchi
