#TBT – DJ Ayres – Twelves 12″ Live Vinyl Mix

#TBT this week to DJ Ayres and the all vinyl mix he did for Southern Hospitality back in 2009 for their world renown Twelves 12: Live Vinyl Mix Series. The series was based on the premise of picking 12 of your favorite 12″s and laying it down live. Ayres went in with classics from Fonda Rae, Alicia Myers, Three Times Dope, Nu-Yorican Soul, RCMP, U.P.I. and more. Revisit this killer mix in full above.

FOTR: mOma + Guy

FOTR this week is again mOma + Guy. Sure we just featured them a couple months ago with The Rih-Fix and now they are back again with another batch of funky tropical flavored uptempo edits that you basically need in your crates. The “Fake Love” and “Bad & Boujee” flips alone are worth copping here but they all have some flavor. Check the sounds below and jump over to their Bandcamp and “name your price” to snag the full EP.

2.13 – That New New

TNN flies in this week with a bit under the radar as it was a relatively quiet week for the nu nu (the week before the Grammy’s is not the best time to release new music…friendly FYI). First up is a new one from Desiigner. Hate this dude all you want but fact is he’s got some of the dopest producers in the world behind him now and “Outlet” is a FIRE instrumental at worst. Solid new tune at best. Next up is a cool collab from 2 of the internet’s favorite new rappers in KYLE and Cousin Stizz. Another super fire beat here. Finally is teenager Ama Lou coming through with some dissonant R&B and dancehall vibes that feel very interesting and worth keeping an overall eye on. Stream em all in full below.

TBT this week takes us back 30 years (jeez that’s a long time) to our history of Hip-Hop mix from 1987. Lots of years can be arguably the best years in Hip-Hop. ’87 may not be THAT year but with the debut of N.W.A. along with outstanding releases from EPMD, The Jungle Brothers, Kool G Rap, Public Enemy, LL Cool J and Eric B & Rakim…it was certainly a fantastic year for Rap. Stream this mix loaded with classics in full above and cop the free download below.

FOTR: Lauren Flax

FOTR this week is Lauren Flax. Lauren’s been a massive contributor to the electronic dance music scene in NY over the years with her group CREEP and her constant solo efforts. Her productions and DJing are always top notch and she’s one of our favorite people ever as well. She got a chance to flex a bit recently with a new EP release and a fantastic mix on Jubilee’s “The Pre-Game” radio show for THUMP. Her new EP on Nervous Records is out now. Peep the mix with Jubilee and all her relevant links below.

2.6 – That New New

TNN is here to kick of February and keep things moving in what feels like one of the craziest political climates ever. Music continues to help us get through and here’s some nu nu to share that hopefully helps you do the same. First up is the first new music from Future Islands in almost 3 years. New album and full tour coming from those guys and this first single feels like a warm hug. Second up is a political stand by one of the baddest dudes making rap right now in Vince Staples. So thankful to have this young man sounded so hungry and willing to take a stand. Finally is the full debut LP (FINALLY) from Sampha and it’s so worth the wait. Give yourself a break with this 10 track effort of beauty. Stream all 3 projects in full below.

FOTR: Grits And Biscuits

The Rub and our friends at Grits & Biscuits have a lot in common. Both of our parties started at the Southpaw (RIP) in Brooklyn. We both celebrate our anniversaries in July. We’ve both taken our parties all over the world. And we both like DJ Toomp a lot!

In their seventh year of a fantastic run, Grits & Biscuits continues to be NYC’s best southern hip hop party. They do it with a simple formula that never fails: hot & sweaty club, lots of pop-lock-and-droppin’, and a welcoming family vibe. They throw one of our favorite parties, and are good people!

Check out this crazy video of their yearly anniversary block party: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pej4TvA8UKI

And come learn more this Friday when we team up to provide us all a much needed mental health break to recuperate from all the craziness of 2016 and the first month of 2017. Grab ticket for that here.

1.30 – That New New

While the climate of politics (and humanity in general) is in complete turmoil, it’s become increasingly difficult to find release and maintain sanity. Bless music for being a continuous outlet in all times, good and bad. We saw some heavy hitters release new music this week and a majority of it was flames. Missy Elliot returns with a new single and video that has to be watched to truly be felt. Sure it’s got a trap feel but Missy been on triplets and 808s since ’97. Major Lazer dropped a 108 bpm bomb with PARTYNEXTDOOR and Nicki Minaj that’s sure to be steaming along through the summer. And Thundercat dropped a yacht rock first single to his new LP with features from Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald. You read that right. Check out all 3 in full below.

FOTR: Dirtyfinger

FOTR this week is NY DJ Dirtyfinger. You’re guaranteed to have multiple spots to check him every week. Period. And this Saturday he’ll be rocking with us at The Bell House for the January edition of The Rub.
