12.12 – That New New

TNN is back in the fold with only a couple more weeks to go before we say goodbye to 2016. As 4th quarter is doing it’s thing and we see big name albums dropping left and right, here’s some recent stuff that may have flown under the radar. First up, we’ve got a brand new EP from The-Dream. Love You To Death is a short 5 song release but it’s extremely focus and a strong end of the year look from an extremely talented artist. Second, we see a new single from Jazz Cartier. He’s part of this new wave of Canadian hip-hop artists that’s making major noise and this tune will only carry that narrative. Finally, we’ve got a new future dancehall cut from Noah Issa that feels like we’re getting a glimpse at a major story developing. Stream all 3 releases in full below.

#TBT – DJ Ayres – Best Of Jay-Z Mixtape

Dj Ayres Best Of Jay Z Mixtape

One of our favorite rappers ever, Jay-Z, was born on December 4th, 1969. This now makes him now 47 years old. To honor young Hov getting ‘oh so close’ to that half century mark, we look back to a mix DJ Ayres made back in 2009 with a stack of his favorite Jay-Z tunes.

Here is what Ayres had to say back when he released this classic….

Here are a bunch of my favorite Jay-Z songs, mostly album cuts with a few freestyles and secret joints thrown in for good measure. Since Jay “retired” and came back, his music hasn’t sounded as urgent or hungry to me. He sounds like he’s coasting along, so I wanted to go back and pull out a bunch of his music that made you bob your head, marvel at his flow, puff out your chest, or even raise the little hairs on the back of your neck. The feelings you got from songs like “Where I’m From,” “D’Evils,” “1-900-Hustler” and “You Don’t Know.” Not included: #1 singles you’ve heard a million times, lazy one-take flows, lyrics about inventing the button-down shirt, songs dissing rappers who would later be signed to Jay-Z’s label, and songs produced by Eminem.

The Rih-Fix

We’re the first to admit that mOma gets more shine on The Rub blog than pretty much anyone, and we offer no apology, because he consistently does dope shit. We first heard him play these Rihanna remixes (done with Guy Furious) at The Rub Halloween party, and we were sweating them even before we knew he and Guy did them. Uptempo, sort of Soca-meets-UK-Funky beats with Rihanna vocals on top, I mean what’s not to like!?! Download at Bandcamp (Name Your Price)

FOTR: DJ Risk One

FOTR this week is Risk One. The Bay Area native unfortunately lost his life to cancer back in September and the DJ community has been mourning his loss ever since. He was immensely loved by his friends and peers and he was always a blast to catch behind the decks. Hollerboard alumni, Crooklyn Clan top seller and working DJ world traveler…he made people smile everywhere he would go. Tonight, many of his friends and loved ones will be gathering to celebrate his life in Dolores Park, San Francisco. We remember him today by sharing his last mix he posted and all of his links below. RIP Marques Lewis aka Risk One.

11.28 – That New New

TNN is back this week after a week off and we’re officially closing out November as well as getting so close to the end of this tumultuous year. Some big guns have unloaded with new releases in the last week or so and there definitely seems to be a feel of nostalgic sounds in the air, at least in the pop world. First up this week is a new one from The Weeknd’s polarizing new LP. “A Lonely Night” is one of the many contributions from Max Martin on the album and easily one of the stand out cuts (*EDIT-Full album from The Weeknd has been added*). Next is a last week hold over from the retro fitted new (super short) Bruno Mars full length. “Finesse” sounds like it’s straight out of the Bell Biv Devoe catalog. Finally, we’ve got a cut from the recently dropped collab EP from Gucci Mane and Lil Uzi Vert. Stream all 3 in full below.
