FOTR: Just Blaze

Just Blaze at The Rub 10 Year Anniversary. Photo by Kenny Rodriguez.

What would you do with your time if you were a multiplatinum producer who had hits with everyone from Jay-Z to Usher, Kendrick Lamar to Mariah Carey? Would you still be producing and developing new rappers, scouring the internet and clubs for underground music, and rocking parties as a DJ, week in and week out? Just Blaze is the rare dude who has platinum records to the Nth degree and still looks out for young producers, gives props to underground guys who other people in his position wouldn’t even know about, and works tirelessly but still makes it all look easy. A genuinely nice guy in an industry of wolves. Plus his records have always been peak hour bangers at The Rub – when we put together our Best of New York mix this week, his joints with Jay-Z and Cam’ron went on without us even thinking about it. So while we usually try not to gush too much about our guests, we’re over the moon that Just Blaze is going to be joining us in the DJ booth at Verboten tomorrow night!

The Rub’s Best of New York Mix
By Raspberry Jones

Distance—or lack thereof. It helps narrate the eight million stories of New York’s organized chaos flow. What qualifies as an invasion of privacy elsewhere, is a New Yorker’s way of saying, “excuse me.” The roars of a crowded life: Learn to exist atop one another, yet figure out how to live on your own. Make sure to cherish personal space, thoughts, experiences—but don’t get precious about sharing them on every street-corner, rush-hour subway, or club dance-floor. To survive, keep the things you love close and protect them; though don’t forget to brandish them sharply when expressing your individuality. Especially, when expressing your individuality amongst your people.

Inevitably, your people will have an anthem, a rallying call. His and her people will too. Most New Yorkers do. “Their” song or “their” artist, one long ago taken stock of, and never the twain shall part. Getting your own isn’t hard—it’s a town built on music. There are as many personal anthems in this city as there are clubs, and as many clubs as posses, each at a conscious arm’s length from the next—different neighborhoods, different strokes, and so on. Separate but equal, they sometimes call it—which is, frankly, bullshit—but it does offer an educated musical consumer a limitless choice of which rally to call his/her own.

Though on occasion, they all rally together. Arm-lengths shorten, the separation falls away, yours and theirs becomes ours—and the city sings with one voice, dances on the same beat. This pretense of musical U-N-I-T-Y mostly lasts no longer than a New York minute, an oasis. Yet when it does come around, the city transforms into that mythical place you read of in books, the one you were moving to. This one song engulfs your every move. Your local DJ sets off the dance-floor with it. The midnight jeep boys blast it, keeping you awake. The Garden blares it during time-outs—and maybe some jock choreographs a dance to it. Now the bartenders, the baristas, even the bros. It grows tiring. The oasis dissolves. Though its memory remains, residue retained on the tip of your tongue and on your breath, stuck in your ear forever.

The New York Anthem is a category. Look it up! Impervious to distance—or lack thereof—folding time and space, triggering memory, defining careers. Ask Frank or Liza—or O.C. Each generation gets the one(s) it deserves. Not a sentimental journey, but utilitarian in its emotional and rhythmic output. Just like the city that it serves.

FOTR: Lauren Flax

Our first FOTR (Friend of The Rub) this week, in leading up to our big kickoff party at Verboten this Friday (get your tickets HERE), is Lauren Flax. Lauren’s been a massive contributor to the electronic dance music scene in NY over the years with her group CREEP and her constant solo efforts. We’re incredibly stoked to be able to bring this type of dance music element to The Rub at Verboten as Lauren is as good as it gets. Check out her recent live set recorded at The Bunker below to get yourself all hyped for this Friday’s event. Click some of Lauren’s links to get yourself fully familiar as well.

8.10 – That New New

As we’ve been developing this weekly column into something that covers multiple releases from multiple artists, an album from Dr. Dre just so happened to drop last Friday. And since it’s been 16 years since his last full length release and his first 2 are generally recognized as classics in the history of rap…it only makes sense that Compton got fully digested over here in a hurry. And while the jury is generally out that this is his worst album of the three, there’s definitely a ton of heatrocks on here and the production across the board is top notch. Here’s a link to the Apple Music stream for you to check out if you haven’t had a chance to listen yet. Is this the best album from a rapper in his 50’s ever? Most likely so.

#TBT The Rub – Under The Boardwalk

For #TBT this week in the most literal sense possible, we revisit the Rub Radio mix, Under The Boardwalk, from last summer. To be completely honest, this mix contains some of the most classic songs ever made and Ayres and Eleven put it together last year as an official send off to summer. While it seems that summer is still going strong, kids are getting ready for their return to school and pumpkin spice season is coming way sooner than you might expect. There’s nothing on this mix released after 1968 just to give you a perspective on how timeless this music really is. Revisit this tasty summer send off below.

FOTR: DJ Lindsey

Longtime NYC creative and nightlife contributor DJ Lindsey is our #FOTR (Friend of The Rub) this week. She’s been a part of some legendary club nights in NY such as APT and The Hump and has contributed vocals to tracks with the likes of The Rapture, Beans and Eli Escobar. She’s even on the shortlist of DJs for Prince when he gets the bug to throw a private event. Just yesterday, Lindsey dropped her brand new solo single that’s got an exclusive stream currently up on The Fader that was co-produced by The Twilight Tone and Sammy Bananas. She’s also one of our very special guests for next week’s kickoff of The Rub. Check out the new single and all her links below.

8.3 – That New New

After a week off, we’re back with a new edition of #TNN (That New New) and there’s a couple of tasty new goodies to share with you today. First off, if you’ve been living under the proverbial rock, there’s a new Disclosure album coming September 25th and the new tune the did with Sam Smith has hit the web. “Omen” follows a similar format to their worldwide smash “Latch” but has a more straight ahead dancefloor appeal musically and the track itself has anthem #2 for them written all over it. Track two today comes from D.C. native Rex Riot and his remix for XYLØ’s “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”. It’s a bit of a new sound from Rex but it’s pretty massive with it’s bouncy synthed out hip-hop feel along with it’s very catchy use of the original vocal. Peep both tunes in full below.
