Favorite Things Vol. 1 edition of Rub Radio from last year was a new theme to an old tried and true idea. The goal is to do mixes with some of our favorite records of all time. The idea is to approach making a mix like you would back in high school, where you put on songs you love and want to share with a crush, or your best friend. Maybe time for round two of this soon? Revisit this great series kick-off from Ayres with the stream above and the free download below.

TBT this week takes us back to 2008 with our History of Hip-Hop mix. This interesting year of rap was peppered with a number of interesting tracks and trends. “Royal Flush” noted the beginning of the end of Outkast as a group project, even though the tune itself was so tough. Rick Ross really started to spread his wings as a super star with “The Boss”, which also featured T-Pain who was in the midst of a multi-year flex. Lil Wayne was securing his place as the “best rapper alive” with “A Milli”, arguably his most important tune ever. Acts like Pitbull, John Legend Common, Flo Rida and Snoop Dogg all started experimenting with dance-y tunes and faster tempos. Yes hip-hop was alive and well in 2008. The Rub’s Hip-Hop History 2002 Mix by Brooklyn Radio on Mixcloud

#TBT this week to The Rub’s History of Hip Hop mix from 2002, the year in which The Rub was conceived. Of course, leave the 2002 version of this series to be one of our favorites. Seriously though, 2002 was an amazing year for rap with Cam’ron’s Rocafella debut, Clipse flipping everyone on their ear with their first officially released LP, Scarface dropped a classic in The Fix and so many of the big party cuts became instant classics…all of which helped build the foundation that became The Rub then and now, 15 years later. Revisit this stellar mix with a stream above or a download below.

#TBT – Rub Radio – July 2013

TBT this week goes back 4 years to our anniversary Rub Radio mix from July 2013. Lots of bangers on this mix and some unfortunately have become a bit forgotten in a very short amount of time. You’ve got a now trap classic from Key’s N Krates, Grandtheft and Skratch Bastid’s fantastic “Miley” tune, Drake’s quiet anthem in “The Motion”, one of the best tunes from Yeezus, a underrated hit from JT and a couple of Rub tune sightings as well. Summer is (FINALLY) in full effect and it’s about to be that time to celebrate The Rub turning 15. Stream and download below.

#TBT – DJ Eleven – Canadian Bacon

Serious throwback this week from DJ Eleven for TBT. Going back to the tail end of the 00’s for his Canadian Bacon Mix. This was a promo mix done for Beat Street Records in Vancouver and one quick listen feels like a time warp back to the heyday of the Hollerboard. And Eleven’s Bay Area influence is all over this thing, especially in the first 20 mins or so. Throwbacks from the likes of Rick James, James Brown and Rolling Stones make an appearance. Give this super fun mixtape a re-listen (or first listen) today. Stream up top and free download below.

#TBT – The Rub – Under The Boardwalk

#TBT this week is full of some of the most classic music of all time as we revisit the Rub Radio mix, Under The Boardwalk, from Summer of 2014. Ayres and Eleven put it together as an official send off to that summer and it’s a great way to kick this one off. The kids are just getting out of school and the weather FINALLY has started to resemble what it’s supposed to feel like in June. There’s nothing on this mix released after 1968 just to give you a perspective on how timeless this music really is. The History of Hip Hop 1995 by Brooklyn Radio on hearthis.at

TBT this week to 1995 and a very strong argument year for the “golden era” of rap. Like legitimately, there are too many classic tracks and albums that dropped in 1995 to justifiably mention. Featured here are forever anthems from Mobb Deep, Luniz, Bone Thugs, Biggie, ODB, Three 6 Mafia, Junior M.A.F.I.A, GZA, 2Pac and this track list gets ridiculous in a hurry. With this deft mix of 80+ tracks that absolutely matter, ’95 gets a proper shine in what was one of the most influential years in the history of hip-hop. Stream in full above and grab the download below as well.
