Pete from Turntable Lab interviewed me about the challenges of being a professional DJ and running a record label, fatherhood and asian girls.
I’m doing all sorts of stuff from crazy ass raves in Canada to hardcore hip-hop and reggae parties in Brooklyn to playing between live acts at a concert to DJing the casino bar in Vegas. It’s harder but it also keeps things interesting. I rarely take gigs that won’t be fun, just for the money – I still have to be able to “do me” but that can mean a lot of things because I love Taio Cruz “Dynamite” as much as I love Tensnake or Munchi or whatever. So it’s still engaging. And I have this thing in me, when there’s loud music and I’m in that environment, it doesn’t matter how tiring my day was with my daughter or what kind of mood I’m in, when I go on, a switch just flips in me and I’m 100% awake and focused.

Win Win is a supergroup who we’re lucky to be pals with. XXXChange, Ghostdad and Chris Devlin make weird awesome music and their debut album is out now! They play us a bunch of it and talk about funneling subconcious positive energy into music recordings. We’re also joined by our friends from Calgary, Wax Romeo and Fordinho, so stick around to learn exactly how far the latter can physically throw the former.

Sampology is our guest at The Rub in April! Here is a mind-bending mix from our favorite antipodean a/v turntable masher:

I’m starting a new mix series on my site called Heavy Warmup. I love this DJ slot, it’s the time of the night when people are getting their second drink, the dancefloor is just starting to fill up, and the DJ can tease the crowd with great forgotten jams and new secret weapons. So I’ve asked a bunch of my favorite DJs to record a heavy warmup mix and I’ll be posting a new one every couple of weeks on my website.
DJ Eleven – Heavy Warmup Vol 2

Tonight at The Rub we are joined by two of Boston’s finest, DJ Knife & Tommee. They throw a great party called Fresh Produce, where we’ve all done guest sets (in fact I’ll be back up there with Nick Catchdubs on April 9). Fresh Produce is basically classic hip-hop through a 2011 lens, so you’ll hear Biggie and Ed OG next to Cee Lo and 50 Cent. Here’s a little sample of how they rock, to get you pregaming for tonight:

Big K.R.I.T. drops in on Rub Radio to talk about growing up in Mississippi, his influences both on the mic and on production, and his forthcoming record on Def Jam. As always, Cosmo, Eleven and Ayres go in hardbody on the turntables, jumping between hip-hop, funk, house and plenty of curveballs.

Crookers remixed Munchi’s “Shottas” featuring Mr Lexx! And lucky for you they’re giving it away for free on their blog. We have a whole EP of Shottas remixes coming in the next month or so on T&A records, and you can buy the original on the Murda Sounds EP.

The only days I wake up well before the alarm clock goes off are the days that I’ve got a new release from 11 Inch Records hitting the stores. So at 7:15 this morning, I was up-and-at-’em banging away at buy links & facebook sharing and the like spreading the word about yet another release that I’m really genuinely excited about. I’ll let the press release tell the story:
After years of rocking shows around the world with his partners in Tanya Morgan, Donwill has finally taken time to carve out his niche as a soloist. Following the critical acclaim of Tanya Morgan’s first two LPs Moonlighting and Brooklynati and his solo project, Don Cusack in High Fidelity, the native son of Cincinnati has teamed up with 11 Inch Records to release a single off of the album entitled “Love Junkie”.
The Wallpaper produced a-side is a funky ode to one night stands. Germany’s So Shifty flips it into a dancefloor filing UK Funky-influenced bass heavy banger. And “Look At Me”, an all new b-side produced by 1-O.A.K. of the Honor Roll, calls out all the silly behavior that goes on at music industry parties the world over. And, of course, Kalani nailed the art once again!
